Chapter Seven

From the moment she felt her bairn quicken within her belly, Rose had been determined to keep him safe. And it would seem, though he started this life in less than favorable conditions, downright heinous, in fact, she had, until recently, done all she could to keep him well and protected.

How could she have been so stupid? How could she not have realized. All the clues in her mind coming together at once. She should have seen, but she’d been blind to the prospects, dead set on her goal of protecting her clan she’d failed to see that the enemy was right in front of her.

The idea that her betrothal to Cathal Mackenzie now meant her son could possibly be in mortal danger was more than she could bear. Aye, Malcolm had not said as much, but Rose knew. If Cathal was only seeking to marry her so he could gain access to the shores, then what did he need with a young lad who could grow up to be laird one day and challenge him. The answer was simple and terrifying.

Nothing.

This was why the king had sent his prized warrior after her.

Because they knew that she and Byron were in mortal danger, and the only way to draw the beast out into the open was to make them the bait.

Oh, she knew that wasn’t exactly what the king and Malcolm had set out to do. They had stolen her and her child under the pretense of safety, but they were still the lure for the beast that wanted to gobble them up.

Barely able to sleep after figuring out the notion, and not able to even take a bite of the sweet bannock given her that morning, Rose sat before Malcolm on his great black steed, the swaying motion lulling her into sleep, only to be jarred back awake by the fears running through her mind like a pack of ferocious wolves.

This time when she jerked her head up, she bumped into Malcolm’s chin. He grunted and leaned down to whisper, his lips touching her ear. “Rest, my lady. We’ve a ways to go yet.”

She shivered, fingers of desire warring with her fists of indignation.

Even though spring had nearly arrived, there was a bite to the air that left her chilled. The gooseflesh covering her skin had nothing to do, whatsoever, with the man whose lap she sat upon. And she’d swear that on the Bible, if only to later pay a penance.

“I canna,” she said, her voice sounding far away over the rumbling of the horse’s hooves echoing the beat of her heart.

“I know ye worry over your lad, but the best thing ye can do is rest so ye’ve the energy to keep up with him when we arrive at Kildrummy. There’s certain to be a number of things a young excitable lad is wanting to chase and discover.”

“We still have at least two days to travel. I can sleep later,” she grumbled, not wanting to agree, even though what he said made sense.
